It was a flourishing roman Municipio and was called Tifernum Tiberinum.
The young Pliny mentioned it in his letters and built a temple there in the second century.

Civitas Castelli

In the Lombard era the town was called Castrum Felicitatis
and then in the Middle Ages it was a guelf free town and was known as “Civitas Castelli”.
It’s territory extended beyond the Appenines.

and it is said that the Tiferno was destroyed by Totila and rebuilt by Bishop Florido.

When the young Pliny wrote to his friend Apolinnare
describing the area he said “the town appears beautiful:
imagine a vast amphitheatre that only nature can produce…”.
